External military presence and influence have historically played a significant role in East Asian geopolitics. In this conference, the role of delegates in DISEC will be to address questions of Western interventionism and colonialism in the East China Sea. While acknowledging the long-running hostility and alternate sources of friction between involved countries, delegates will consider ideas including the following: diplomacy and conflict resolution in the context of long-running regional tensions, the delineation between military support and imperialist expansion, and the weight of historical obligation on contemporary politics.
