University of Kentucky Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Commerce

Designed exclusively for graduate students, University of Kentucky Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Commerce prepares leaders for careers demanding intellectual rigor, practical judgment and global perspective. Its highly respected master's degree can be completed in three semesters, allowing graduates to enter the workforce sooner while benefiting from an intensive, cohort-based experience.

What sets Patterson apart is its commitment to blending theory with practice, in an intimately sized program. Students learn from distinguished scholars and experienced practitioners, gaining firsthand exposure to diplomacy, international commerce and public service. The program's intentionally small size creates an environment where close faculty mentorship, collaboration and meaningful professional relationships become part of the educational experience.

Patterson attracts students who are intellectually curious, thrive in a rigorous academic setting and aspire to make a difference on the world stage. They leave prepared not only to understand complex international issues, but to analyze them thoughtfully, communicate effectively and lead with confidence.

Graduates can be found throughout the US government (Foreign Service, intelligence community, defense, Capitol Hill, Treasury, FBI, Homeland Security), the NGO community, and in private enterprise. International alumni follow similar paths, with many working in their respective country's diplomatic corps (Korean Ambassador to the US, Gabon Ambassador to the Benelux and EU, deputy foreign minister, UN Permanent Representative) and Ministries of Economics (El Salvador) or Finance (Afghanistan, Zambia), international development banks, UN specialized agencies, and NGOs. While their career paths vary, they share a common foundation: the ability to navigate complexity, solve challenging problems and lead in an increasingly interconnected world.

At Patterson, success is measured not simply by the positions graduates hold, but by the impact they make. Discover how our master’s degree program equips students with the knowledge, perspective and practical skills to serve the public good and help shape the future of international affairs.
