The history of NASA and the Space Race is as fascinating as it is interesting, but it is not the only way in which history might have played out. In this specialized committee, delegates are tasked with creating America's space program and bringing it to fruition. During our first 2-3 sessions, conducted as a specialized GA, delegates, acting as 1958 political, military, and scientific bigwigs, will organize and launch a space program. Creativity is encouraged, but beware, passing your proposal will require Congressional and Presidential approval! Once the space program is organized and signed into law, the rest of the committee will proceed as a normal crisis focused on winning the Space Race against the Soviet Union. Delegates should expect a universe of possibility in backroom, so long as arcs are detailed and well-justified. Assume nothing, attempt everything, and remember: the sky is only the beginning.
I'm Hugo Rosen, a sophomore at Emory studying History, and I'm excited to be your Crisis Director for Space Race 1958! I come from Washington, D.C., where I like to visit the Capitol's public galleries and watch the very Congressional rumblings and debates to which you will be subject throughout this committee! I love to backpack, run, go to the gym, read science fiction, and explore those areas of Emory not marked by blue signs (how often do you think about the spaces between a building's walls?). I've reported on Supreme Court Oral Arguments twice, interviewed a few judges, stared down the Chairman of the D.C. Council, and promoted thoughtful political discourse at Emory through a series of conversations on controversial issues. I've been involved with MUN for over five years and can't wait to discuss a topic that combines history, science, politics, and hopefully just a pinch of malfeasance!
