The Algerian Question, 1954

Advanced Level

Committee Description

The Algerian Question takes place November 1954. This comes at a time following the beginning of the Algerian War of Independence, as a wave of anti-colonial mobilizations following WW2 has begun to reshape the international climate away from previous imperialism. Algeria, which had been a colony of France from 1830 to 1848, was split into three departments still ruled by France in 1848. This made Algeria a special type of colony, as it was considered a part of the French Republic rather than a colony. Currently (1954), Algeria has erupted into conflict as the FLN, Algeria's National Liberation Front (Front de Libération Nationale), has carried out planned attacks across the country. This conflict causes a particular difficulty for the UN as it blurs the line between decolonization and civil war due to Algeria’s particular situation. The FLN seeks international recognition, material support, and legitimacy through the UN, while European settler communities (Pieds-Noirs) and pro-French forces resist any move toward independence. This committee challenges delegates to balance sovereignty, emerging human rights norms, and geopolitical realities.

Crisis Director: Gabriel Herne

Hi, my name is Gabriel Herne(He/him). I am a freshman at Emory University with the intention of majoring in Business and Political Science. I am originally from Rome, Italy, but I have been lucky enough to move around a lot and see different parts of the world. I have participated in Model United Nations since I was a freshman in high school in the European international high school circuit. I served as my high school's secretary general for 3 years, hosting numerous conferences and even having the opportunity to chair the General Assembly at the UN FAO headquarters in Rome. I have also had the opportunity to attend my first college conference at UPMUNC, where I received an honorable mention. One fact about myself is that I speak 4 languages. I can’t wait to meet you all and have a fantastic and memorable ENMUNC!
