As the clock ticks toward 2050, the world faces growing pressure to keep global warming below 1.5°C. With over 75 percent of land altered by human activity and demand for critical minerals expected to double or even triple by mid-century, the planet is approaching a tipping point. UNEP now stands at the center of the global response. This committee asks delegates to tackle two key challenges.
The first is ecosystem restoration: reviving damaged ecosystems to restore biodiversity, protect livelihoods, and strengthen climate resilience. Delegates will explore how countries can work together to expand restoration at scale, focusing on financing, education, local partnerships, and long-term monitoring. The second is resource extraction, where the global shift to clean energy has driven a sharp rise in demand for materials like nickel, lithium, and cobalt. With nickel demand alone projected to rise by 105 percent by 2030, delegates must consider how UNEP can help shape sustainable and equitable mining practices that serve both people and the planet.
