Chess is a renowned game of strategy that tests the wit of combatants across the chessboard. Checkmate! The World of Chess (2025) tests delegates’ abilities to use this strategy as it applies to the real world. As a committee of chess grandmasters, delegates will make strategic moves across the real world to tackle an ever-important array of crises.
Delegates have to contend with the increasing level of monetization in the game, trying to ensure that the game remains a test of skill and no one is priced out of competing in chess. Delegates also need to address governance of the game and resist the monopolization of chess by a few for-profit entities which put limits on players. Delegates will also deal with other issues like the rise of cheating, the promotion of women’s chess, and the integration of geopolitical issues into the chess world.
Sam Aurora (they/them) is a senior from Marietta, Georgia studying Math and International Studies. This is their fourth year in Emory International Relations Association and 8th year doing Model UN. They have done a variety of roles for Emory’s collegiate conferences from chairing committees to being the Sec-Gen of Emory’s high school conference. They are excited to see all the delegates competing at MUNE this Fall. Outside of class, you can find them obsessing over word games, hanging out with their friends, or maybe even playing chess. Contact them at sam.aurora@emory.edu if you have any questions.
