Arkham Asylum, once Gotham City’s premier mental health institution, stands at a crossroads between its storied past and uncertain future. Decades of institutional incompetence or outright malice combined with neglect from citywide leadership and a rapidly decaying physical infrastructure have caused the organization to be on the verge of near collapse. Further complicating the issue is Gotham’s relatively recent rise of supervillains, who are being contained within Arkham due to their underlying mental health conditions. The institution, which was built solely with the intention of treating non-superhuman individuals, has thus struggled with containing these super-criminals, and weathered several severely destructive escape attempts. A recent mass-escape, orchestrated by a corrupted Arkham psychiatrist, has brought all of these issues into the light of the Gotham public. Citizens, already tired of the decades of institutional corruption and inefficacy of Gotham City officials to stop crime in the city as a whole, are now demanding city-wide reform, with Arkham at the center of debate. What to do with Arkham Asylum has become a political lightning rod within Gotham’s upcoming mayoral race. Meanwhile, the federal government has stepped in, seeking to establish stricter standards for security and containment within the facility. Ambitious delegates can find ways to seize more power while placating the public and federal government in a reformed Arkham, or achieve their goals in whatever system takes its place.

Kian Sheridan is a junior majoring in biology on the pre-med track. He hails from Augusta, GA. When he's not widening the circle as a MUN delegate, you might find him dissecting mouse eyes as part of his research on retinopathy of prematurity in an ophthalmology lab, serving his duties as a resident advisor, tutoring the ignorant masses in the wonders of statistics as an learning assistant, or just reading a book. As a lifelong lover of DC Comics, both the actual comics and outside media, he is delighted to be doing this committee. He is especially thrilled that it is a Batman-oriented committee, as Batman is by far his favorite superhero. If you couldn’t tell from the background guide, one of his hobbies is to look up obscure DC characters on the internet. With literally thousands of characters to interact with and dozens of different directions delegates can take their arcs, he is eager to see what creative solutions delegates create over the course of the weekend.
