GA Third: Social and Humanitarian Committee (SOCHUM)

Beginner and Intermediate Level

Committee Description

The United Nations General Assembly Third Committee (SOCHUM) addresses global social, humanitarian, and cultural issues, with a particular focus on human rights and social development. In this committee, delegates will engage in discussions surrounding two urgent challenges affecting young people worldwide: the global youth mental health crisis and persistent inequalities in access to quality education.  Delegates will examine how governments, international organizations, and community-based and non-governmental organizations can work together to support youth wellbeing, reduce disparities, and promote inclusive development. Through research, debate, and collaboration, delegates will draft solutions that are realistic, culturally sensitive, and applicable across diverse national contexts. This committee encourages thoughtful discussion, strong policy writing, and cooperation to advance the rights and futures of children and adolescents around the world.

Chair: Ananya Phatak

Ananya Phatak (she/her) is a freshman at Emory majoring in Neuroscience & Behavioral Biology and Philosophy. She is from just outside Boston, Massachusetts, and has been participating in Model UN for 7 years, all through middle and high school. Outside of MUN, she loves reading, traveling, baking, and going for long walks.
