The Lorax: Thneedville in Crisis

Committee Description

First came the song Let it Grow, but what happened next? This committee takes place in Thneedville, the city depicted in Illumination's The Lorax (2012). Taking place after the conclusion of the film, delegates will have the opportunity to explore the politics in The Lorax and confront the idea of recovering from an authoritarian society amidst an ecological crisis. Prior to the start of this committee, Thneedville has existed as a surveillance state as it's made evident that O'Hare Air monitors when citizens leave and tries to prevent trees from returning. As Thneedvillians have decided to plant a tree and move forward, the question remains of what's next? In this committee delegates will face issues related to restructuring the government in a post-Let It Grow society and tackle issues like the formation of new leadership, the rebuilding of the environment, construction of natural spaces in Thneedville, and the prophesied return of the Lorax. Directives will be passed to solve these problems and structure a new government that hopefully helps the environment if they can ensure survival. Delegates are expected to use political knowledge to form a better understanding of the impacts of global authoritarianism and environmental damage.

Crisis Director: Finn Reilly

Finn is a second-year student at Emory University based out of Emory's Oxford campus. Double majoring in Business and International Studies, Finn is interested in entering the professional world in commercial aviation hoping to make it more sustainable and create better working standards for all employees and enjoyable for passengers. On campus, Finn is involved as an RA, President of OxBroadway (his campus musical theatre association), a Head Delegate of the Oxford Model UN branch, and a campus tour guide. Interested in global affairs regarding our ever-changing environment and rise of authoritarianism and its technology, Finn looks forward to seeing ways delegates can confront these issues while diving into the world of the Lorax!
