Topic 1: Facilitating a Transition to a Circular Economy:
Since the first UNEA in 2014, the UNEA has focused on shaping policies to address environmental challenges. However, overconsumption and poor waste management continue to harm the planet, with millions of tons of plastic entering the oceans each year. Efforts like banning single-use plastics are a start but fail to solve deeper problems like inefficient recycling systems and the high costs of sustainable alternatives. In this committee, delegates will explore ways to establish global recycling standards, improve waste management infrastructure, and address the economic challenges faced by developing countries.
Topic 2: Promoting Sustainable Urban Development
General Assembly Resolution 70/1, which introduced the Sustainable Development Goals, emphasizes making cities inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. With over 70% of the global population expected to live in urban areas by 2050, cities are at the center of climate challenges such as rising temperatures and extreme weather. They must also lead efforts to adapt and mitigate these impacts. In this committee, delegates will work on solutions like integrating renewable energy into urban infrastructure, creating affordable and sustainable housing, and protecting urban ecosystems through better management of green spaces and biodiversity.
